Ever since the 1850s, the town of Szolnok on the river Tisza was a much-desired plein air destination in summer for painters from Austria and Hungary. They were attracted by the picturesque town, the lowland landscape, and the bustling atmosphere of the marketplaces, where besides buying and selling there was lively discussion and haggling. Mednyánszky visited Szolnok in 1877 and 1880.
