In the series named “A Smile for Myself” Štefan Schwartz complemented his disparate sketches with real pills and medicines in their packaging. He thereby used their diversity of shape and colour, which in normal circumstances people overlook, while at the same time offering a relatively enigmatic view of his private life and state of health. In his later series also, where he paraphrased famous works by other artists, he made use of motley-coloured pills.
