In his diaries Mednyánszky often used the word “Stimmung”, meaning mood. This designated sections of countryside which, typically for him, evoked a variety of feelings. Precisely this, capturing a mood via painting, was what he considered his chief task as an artist. He was influenced by his experience with plein air painting in Barbizon in France, where he had stayed in 1875, hence three years before creating his painting with the ravens.
