The soft light of the quiet day reflects off the shiny surfaces and the face of the unknown woman. In the subtle oil painting, however, she is not depicted as a bride, a mother or an object of male desire, but quite the opposite. The first Slovak female painter – Želmíra Duchajová-Švehlová – created a psychological portrait of an emancipated woman of the early 20th century.

Colour splashes and light contrasts form the basic building blocks of the artist's paintings, created directly in plein air. Her timeless lyrical landscapes and genre portraits move between Slovak luminism – the "art of light" – and the European tendencies of post-impressionism.
