One of the subjects Mednyánszky addressed rather often were portraits and portrait studies of pahols, peasants, coachmen, workers, and vagabonds.

Ordinary people fascinated him not only in Slovakia, but also during his stays in Budapest, Paris and Vienna. His diaries preserve his observations and notes on the interesting characters of the people he met. Some were also his friends who supported him throughout his life.

The artist was known for presenting his portraits to those he portrayed, so what has survived is probably only a fraction of what he created in his lifetime.
