Madonna Enthroned with Saint Barbara (?) and Saint Anton

The reason why we rarely know the authors of works of this type is partly because they were created in workshops where several painters worked under the direction of a master. Often the master drew up the design according to contemporary and stylistic criteria, and several members of the workshop worked together to produce it, with the most important details, such as the face or the decoration of the clothing, were done by experienced painters or by the master himself, while younger, less experienced apprentices may have worked on less important details. 

But also that the mission of the painters of the altarpieces was to communicate the biblical stories and saints to the people. What was essential, then, was what they depicted and not their own authorial input.
